Acer Speedwing 400. 81 cm wingspan. 535 g (19 oz) including 9x1100mAh NiMH pack.
Tough as Picojet, fast as Projeti.
Flown 7/2003 - 7/2004.

Guts salvaged from Picojet: Hitec 555 Rx, HS81MG servos, Multiplex ESC, Dean's base-loaded antenna, speed 400 can motor, Graupner Cam Speed prop.

Modifications:

  • Foam finished with diluted white glue and 1500-grit sanding.
  • Leading edge has 0.7 oz fiberglass cloth over 0.75 mm carbon rod.
  • Fiberglass patch under nose protects foam from battery-bouncing.
  • Rx and ESC cases replaced with heatshrink, saving 5 grams.
  • JB-Weld ESC's heatsink, not wimpy thermal paste.
  • Industrial-velcro battery mount.
  • Wires routed internally through lightening holes in plywood spine.
  • Servos mounted far aft: shorter, lighter control rods.
  • Coroplast tiplets replaced with Oracover'd balsa sheet: lighter, stronger, stiffer, and glues better.
  • Carbon tape bottom, strapping tape top. Oracover Lite covering.
  • 2 mil vinyl lettering and custom maple leaf from Vinylwrite (707-259-1280).
  • Patriotic colour scheme makes orientation foolproof, even in heavy snow squalls.

HeCell NiMH 9x1100mAh packs are great, and they squeeze into Terry as well.
