On a nose-in, the battery smashed through the plywood
bulkhead and into the (stock) Kontronik Rondo ESC soldered
to the back of the motor. Finally beyond repair, the
nose was sawn off and replaced with two carbon tubes
supported with fiberglass cloth. The battery now slides
in below the motor, and is restrained by a rubber band
attached to the forward wing dowel.
The speed 480 motor and Jeti JES 250 ESC were salvaged from
the Manta. Climb is about the same
as with a speed 400 and conventional nose. Glide slope suffers
surprisingly little at low speeds.
On landing, the nose scoop collected less snow than I expected.
(Two years later, I find these construction techniques amusingly naive.
But it flew!)
